The building which is now the Memphis Hotel Amsterdam was formerly a number of prestigious family homes. One of these being the birthhouse and home to Alfred Heineken.
The Memphis Hotel
About 40 years ago, there was a demand for luxury hotels in Amsterdam. Mr. L.H. Goudsmit who later became owner of more hotels and restaurants in the area of Amsterdam, bought the buildings on the corner of the De Lairessestraat and the Cornelis Schuytstraat and renovated them creating The Memphis Hotel. The name "Memphis" was chosen because it is well known and easy to pronounce all over the world.
5 star Hotel
The first years were very successful and the hotel enjoyed a 5 star rating. It became known as a dependence of the 5 star Amstel Hotel that had opened also at that time. After 15 years Mr. Goudsmit decided to sell the hotel and had a number of owners since. During this time the hotel was reduced to a 4 star tourist hotel.
In 2008 it becam part of the EMB Hotels Group. The hotel has a lot of corperate guest, due to the right businesslocation. But on the other hand enough of leisure guest as well, which like the same location, but for different reasons. Like Van Gogh museum, Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk museum, Vondelpark, high end shoppingstreets and de canals.
